10 iconic video game characters and their MCU counterparts

There isn’t much of an overlap between the MCU and iconic video game characters other than the fact that they symbolize their respective media’s perhaps understandable addiction to the big tent pole franchises. In truth, there is nothing wrong with that, in fact, they allow their creators to take more risks with separate projects. And, it’s hard to deny that big-name video games and blockbuster movies have a lot of hidden depths and are extremely entertaining.

Surprisingly, many video game characters have a counterpart in the annals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, without further ado, here’s a look at some of the most beloved video game characters and the MCU characters they look a lot like.

ten Alice & Scarlet Witch (McGee’s American Alice)

Alice from American McGee and Scarlet Witch from WandaVision.

If a fan looked to the movies on their own, they wouldn’t be able to find much evidence that Alice’s Alice by American McGee and Scarlet Witch were similar. That is to say until the very recent conclusion WandaVision is taken into account.

Both are about women who struggle with grief and have found themselves in make-believe worlds that end up not being as friendly as you first thought at first glance. With Wanda, his Westview, while with Alice, his Wonderland.

9 Michael De Santa and the Vulture (Grand Theft Auto V)

Michael De Santa from GTA V and The Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Michael De Sana, one of the three playable characters of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V, would probably get along with The Vulture of Spider-Man: Homecoming. After all, the two have very similar histories.

Vulture and Michael are both elderly gentlemen who come from humble beginnings and use crime to provide their families with better lives. Michael’s crime style is a little less flashy, but otherwise the characters are quite similar.

8 Sir Daniel Fortesque and Thor (MediEvil)

Sir Dan from MediEvil and Thor from the Thor movies.

Visually, Thor and Sir Daniel Fortesque have very little in common, because while Thor is pleasing enough to look at, Sir Daniel is … another matter. But in truth, both are noble heroes who were less noble in their lives before they became heroes.

Thor was the pompous heir to the throne of Asgard who was banished to Midgard after proving how unworthy of the throne he was. During this time, MediEvil’s the protagonist more or less cheated his way to become the king’s champion, only to be humiliated when he was first killed in a battle with the sorcerer Zarok, his journey after the resurrection being that of redemption.

seven Jax Briggs & War Machine (Mortal Kombat)

Jax from Mortal Kombat and the MCU's War Machine.

This one is obvious because Jax Briggs of Mortal combat and War Machine are both men who work for the military. However, there is a certain event in War Machine’s life that strengthens its connection with the famous Kombatant.

In Captain America: Civil War, War Machine’s armor is accidentally damaged by The Vision, causing it to collapse into the ground, crippling it. He then receives bionic supports for his legs, mirroring how Jax’s arms were destroyed by Ermac, only to be replaced with robot arms.

6 Agent 47 and the Winter Soldier (Hitman)

Agent 47 from Hitman and Winter Soldier from the Captain America series.

Agent 47, the “hero” of Hitman series, is a stone-faced killer employed by an agency of questionable character. Meanwhile, The Winter Soldier, one of the villains of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is a stone-faced killer employed by an agency of questionable morals.

In Hitman Absolution, Agent 47 turns against the organization he was killing for due to the heroic actions of his master Diana Burnwood. Likewise, The Winter Soldier rejects the brainwashing Hydra subjected him to because of the actions of his former friend Captain America.

5 Yoshi and Groot (Super Mario)

Yoshi from Super Mario and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Yoshi and Groot are two super lovable characters who follow the lead of a much hairier individual. The two characters manage to convey a lot although neither of them are known for their conversational skills.

Both are known to speak a single sentence which can convey a lot of meaning, with both sentences containing their names. Yoshi can only say his own name, while the more verbose Groot is able to say “I am Groot”.

4 Nathan Drake and Spider-Man (Uncharted)

Nathan Drake from Uncharted 3 and Spider-Man from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Nathan Drake and Spider-Man have a lot in common, and not just that they’re both played by Tom Holland. While Nate tends to be more deadly and devious than Spidey (unless the comics factor in), their main characters are very similar.

Drake and Peter Parker are both underdogs with things that rarely, if ever, go right for them. Additionally, the two admire an older man with a twisted mind and killer facial hair. For Spider-Man, it’s Tony Stark, while for Drake, it’s Victor Sullivan.

3 Conker The Squirrel & Rocket Raccoon (Conker’s Bad Fur Day)

Conker from Conker's Bad Fur Day and Rocket Racoon from Avengers: Endgame.

Rocket and Conker may look cute at first glance, but dig deeper and a much darker character will be found. Conker’s Bad Fur Day sparked a litany of cheers as well as controversy upon its release, as it was a South Park-esque raunchy comedy masquerading as a typical cutesy N64 platformer.

Rocket is very similar to Conker, with both of them fond of swearing, alcohol, and guns. Additionally, Conker’s ability to find solutions to his problems via pressure sensitive pads is similar to how Rocket Raccoon enjoys crafting wonderfully absurd weapons.

2 Link and Captain America (The Legend of Zelda)

Link of Ocarina of Time and Captain America of Age of Ultron.

Link of THE Legend of Zelda is one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time, with only Mario and Sonic rivaling his popularity. While Link’s mute nature means he can’t give overly patriotic speeches, he shares many similarities with Captain America.

In Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link is sent to the future to save the world, just as Captain America was frozen and brought back years into the future to save the world again. Both are legends and beacons of hope in a gloomy, gloomy world.

1 Kratos & Drax the Destroyer (God of War)

Drax The Destroyer from Guardians of The Galaxy and Kratos from God of War.

While Guardians of the Galaxy itself was a surprise hit, Drax The Destroyer was one of the movie’s biggest surprises. The Overly Serious, Super Literal Killing Machine wasn’t just one of the funniest characters in the movie, he’s also basically Kratos’ MCU doppelgänger.

In particular, the Kratos of the David Jaffe era, the early Kratos and Drax being humorless lunatics who wish to slaughter evil gods responsible for the murders of their families. They both tend to look before they jump, but both also softened as soon as they found new families.
