Senator Armstrong – Metal Gear Rising

Senator Armstrong Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.

Metal Gear Rising is a crazy hack-and-slash game with tons of unique bosses. Monsoon is a boss with magnetic powers who gives speeches about the nature of memes. He would make a lot of sense to include as a one-scene wonder-type character. The final boss, Stephen Armstrong, ended up becoming even more iconic.

The character is barely in the game until the last hour. This is in quite stark contrast to other metal gear villains that are fairly well-known quantities the whole adventure. Armstrong only comes out in the final hour, but makes a name for himself with insane lines and tough boss fights. He’s remained a meme icon since the game’s release, despite only having a few hours to impress.

Zoroark – Pokemon Black and White

Pokémon Sword and Shield Zoroark

Lucario is one of Pokemonthe most popular designs. The Gen 4 Pokémon won the hearts of fans with its typing. Game Freak aimed to replicate its success in the next generation. They started to massively market the new dark-type Zoroark.

Zoroark was to be Rival N’s signature Pokémon, which was fine. Fans were shocked to learn that N’s team was the only place they could find Zoroark. Barring events, there was no way to find Zoroark in the original Pokemon Black and White. This upset fans, and Game Freak ended up making Zoroark more common in future games, but he’s still rare in his early days.

Green Biker Dude – Mega Man X2

Mega Man rides alongside the Green Biker Dude in x2.

mega man isn’t really focused on secondary characters. Civilians and other basic NPCs are quite rare in the franchise. That’s what makes the intro to Mega Man X2 partly so shocking. Alongside Mega Man X, another robot rides alongside him. Fans dubbed this unnamed NPC the “Green Biker Dude”.

X technically fights as part of a force in these games. That lone rider in the intro is one of the few times he’s shown, and fans would celebrate this guy for it. “Green Biker Dude” became famous enough to be referenced in the Archie comics and Mega Man games from developer WayForward. Unfortunately, after rolling it is quickly shot down and explodes, so there’s not much to discuss.

Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard – Jade Empire

John Cleese is the standout thing about Jade Empire.

jade empire is an Xbox RPG from Bioware. At the time, it was quite different from other Bioware games for its more Eastern-inspired setting. The player played as a martial arts master and could choose how to develop his martial art. These days, the game is best remembered for featuring John Cleese.

The British comic legend lent his voice to one of the game’s most memorable characters. The character is an alien explorer trying to “civilize” the people of the Jade Empire. Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard is a dramatic enough name, but the character is actually optional. He only appears in a series of optional quests, which means he can be missed.

Error – Zelda II: Link’s Adventure

Error says its iconic line in Zelda II.

Many of the game’s early characters were enigmatic and confusing. This was particularly evident during the second The Legend of Zelda Game. A character living alone simply says “I’m a mistake” without elaboration. This earned him and his phrase memetic status, despite never appearing in another Zelda Game.

The line is not what it seems, however. There is another character in the game called Bagu. This is a mistranslation of “bug” as in computer bug, and Error is supposed to be paired with it. This makes Error’s only significant moment, Bagu’s delivery of a message, somewhat opaque.

The Great Mighty Poo – Conker’s Bad Fur Day

Big Powerful Poo

Conker’s Bad Fur Day is a completely absurd game. The game was Rare’s parody of the games that made them popular in the first place, like Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo 64. It featured a brilliant animal protagonist but set in a dark and depraved world. No scene shows this better than the mid-game boss fight with the Great Mighty Poo.

The boss fight takes place in a mountain made entirely of feces. The turd will emerge from different locations around the arena and begin to sing opera to Conker. During his song, Conker has to throw toilet paper in his mouth. He’s only in the game for that boss fight, but it’s one of the most memorable scenes in the game.

Space Core – Portal 2

Space Core flies past the cmaera in the Portal 2 ending.

Gate is no stranger to iconic characters in a scene. The original game had the Weighted Companion Cube. It was a portable item that players grew to grow attached to despite lacking functionality or dialogue. One item that’s not lacking in these things is Portal 2’s Space Core.

Also known as the Space Sphere, this type only appears during the final boss battle. He’s a dysfunctional maniac who just says how much he loves space to the point of nausea. His dialogue ended up being quoted by players all over the internet. It even ended up becoming an official mod for Skyrim he was so popular.

Father Grigori – Half-Life 2

Father Grigori talks to Gordon in Half-Life 2.

half-life as a franchise has always flirted with horror. One of its darkest areas is undoubtedly Ravenholm of Half Life 2. This burnt-out neighborhood is completely infested with zombies and other aliens. Fortunately, Father Grigori is there to help light Gordon’s path.

Half Life 2 is known for its excellent tracking AI. Grigori is no exception, acting as Gordon’s partner during the events at Ravenholm. He is a badass militant priest and the last survivor of the zombies. He makes quite an impression and quite a good backup.

James – Fallout 3

Getting a famous voice actor can really add gravitas to a game. This was the case with Fallout 3, who managed to land Liam Neeson as the player’s father in a memorable role. His performance is quite spectacular and one of the game’s most defining moments. Unfortunately, because he’s so expensive, he only appears at the beginning and then briefly at the very end.

James is a motivating character for the protagonist. Neeson’s performance helps the player connect with him during his limited screen time. He is a doctor who appears as a reasonable figure in the hell of the wasteland. Considering he’s such a big character at the start of the game, it’s no surprise that he’s remained iconic.

0^2 – Kirby 64

Kirby and Ribbon fly while battling Zero Two in Kirby 64.

Kirby games tend to get pretty dark by the eleventh hour. It started with Nightmare in Kirby’s adventure, which was a surprise hidden boss in one scene. zero of Dreamland 3 was similar but also introduced blood into the fight. Zero Two or 0^2 of Kirby 64 is the third and probably the most famous version.

The boss only appears if all collectibles are found. The boss himself is a terrifying angel who actively bleeds and transforms when Kirby attacks him. His shocking depravity made him one of the series’ most famous final bosses. This was helped by its hugely epic boss theme, which even made its way into Super Smash Bros...
