Video game characters, just like characters from books or movies, have to go through events and changes that define their arc. One of the most rewarding things for an audience is to witness the growth of a beloved character and to follow their evolution over time.

Video game developers often tend to take huge risks by taking on characters in ways that fans might not see coming. But a well-defined, engaging story certainly helps audiences get a feel for how events shaped their favorite characters. In some cases the change has been visual or cosmetic, while in others the changes are deeply rooted in their personality.

Here, we take a look at the latter and see how some of the most beloved characters in video games have changed dramatically since their debut.

5) Kratos – God of war

When the gaming audience first encounter Kratos, the demigod is the epitome of rage, murder, and ruthless vengeance. The character always seems to have an ever angry tone throughout God of War.

The simple truth was that Kratos, as a character, had run his course and towards the end of his run had more or less become a parody of himself. The character eventually lost speed, and Santa Monica had to return to the drawing board.

In 2018’s God of War, Kratos is much older, with a stronger grip on the rage that defined his past. However, Kratos’ attempt to be a good father and teach his son the ways of a god are the most emotional moments in the game.

Kratos becomes unrecognizable from the way he was first seen and is perhaps one of the best-crafted character arcs in video game history.

4) Lara Croft – Tomb Raider

The Tomb Raider franchise is steeped in video game history. However, the franchise managed to make a major comeback with Square Enix in 2013 and Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider.

Perhaps one of the main reasons that Tomb Raider and Lara Croft didn’t really sympathize with fans in the 2000s was the evolution of audience sensibilities. In a post-Uncharted world, fans had much more appreciation for the vulnerable and real characters as opposed to the conventional “hero”.

Lara Croft from previous games was the antithesis of this archetype. The sense of invincibility around her character may have worked in her favor, and Crystal Dynamics had to shake things up with the reboot.

2013’s Lara Croft was an amateur in her early days and forced to deal with situations she isn’t quite equipped for. Throughout the game, players have watched Lara evolve from a fearful, amateurish explorer to a hardened and skilled hunter.

Lara, as a character, was much more vulnerable than her previous iteration and had a lot more humanity towards her. It instantly made her more accessible and breathed new life into a franchise and character.

3) Dante – Devil May Cry

Dante is, without question, one of the most endearing video game characters of all time, having gone through several iterations and remaining as popular as ever. Dante, as a character, didn’t exactly have the most nuanced background, with most of his personality boiling down to lines and jokes.

However, games like Devil May Cry 2, and even Devil May Cry 3 to an extent, have attempted to look beyond the performative exterior of the pizza eater Demon Hunter. However, perhaps the biggest redesign and repetition of the character came from 2013 DmC Devil May Cry, developed by Ninja Theory.

While the character wasn’t received too positively at first, it was perhaps the deepest dive into Dante’s personality more than any other game in the franchise.

Dante in the 2013 title wasn’t the ultra-confident demon hunter we saw in previous games, but a delinquent upstart with little care for many. He starts off as somewhat obnoxious, but his journey through the events of the game sees him grow into a compelling character.

While CAPCOM has recalled ambition and returned to the familiar version of Dante with Devil May Cry 5, it’s a shame fans weren’t able to see more of Ninja Theory’s take on the Devil May Cry universe. and Dante.

2) Chris Redfield – Resident Evil

From what players have been able to gauge from Chris Redfield’s somewhat cryptic appearances in Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil Village trailer, it doesn’t look like he’s here to help.

Chris Redfield isn’t exactly Resident Evil’s most beloved protagonist, simply because he was the head of one of the worst-received games in the series: Resident Evil 5. One of the main reasons which fans are not. particularly receptive to him is the fact that he represents the misguided action side of the franchise.

However, his latest appearances seemed to suggest that Chris Redfield is more than just big muscles and grumpy one-liners, as his character takes a dark and sinister turn.

It’s safe to say fans have never seen Chris in an almost villainous role before, and it will be very interesting to see where CAPCOM takes this character next.

1) Ellie– The last of us

Video game narratives have often, despite their marked evolution in terms of complexity and nuance, been considered inferior to television or movies. However, independent studios, and even AAA studios like Naughty Dog, have pushed the boundaries with every game and shown just how well-written games can be.

One of the best examples of a compelling character arc and the devolution of a character into almost villainous territory can be found in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. When players first meet Ellie, she practically lights up the room with her energy and has a solid joke up her sleeve at all times.

After a traumatic event early in the sequel, the player sees her character sink into the depths of humanity and commit one violent act after another. Humorous jokes and moments of levity are replaced by unholy acts of violence and a singular thirst for revenge.

With each act of violence, players see Ellie’s humanity slipping away from him. The character is almost unrecognizable from the version of her we see in the original 2013 title. While this change in tone could just as easily have alienated audiences, due to the quality of the writing, it seemed. be the most logical evolution of his character.
