The 8 funniest video game characters of all time

Video games have been around for so long, and they’ve gone from the highly pixelated gems we grew up with to the three-dimensional first-person characters we see today.

Some games are play-and-go, while others have a long intro that presents a backstory. Even so, it can be difficult to inject humor into a game’s plot or portray a character as funny. Unless the characters are from a TV show or movie and people are familiar with their comedic personalities. For example, people who love casino games and their fantastic bonuses know how beneficial character placement is for the game.

In a video game, however, it can be more difficult to portray a character as a humorous character without being seen as the loud sidekick or the moody villain. Let’s take a look at some of the funniest video game characters that have a comedic temper.

8) GLaDOS – Portal

GLaDOS is the fictional artificial intelligence computer system you’ll see in Portal 1 and Portal 2. Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift created the character, and Ellen McLain voices it. GLaDOS makes the game enjoyable because it is the only other character besides the player. Some of his favorite quotes include, “It’s a guaranteed fact that 80% of you will lose this hand. And 100% of you will die eventually. Math is fun, isn’t it ?! and “The cake is gone!”

7) Wheatley – Portal 2

Wheatley Portal 2

Wheatly is the silly new addition to the Portal series. It is a robotic sphere whose initial mission was to help the antagonist Chell through the trials of the Aperture Science facility. Wheatley is moronic, obsessive, and fearful of a futuristic robot, and most of his humor stems from his inability to prove his competence.

6) ClapTrap – Borderlands 2

Clap Trap Borderlands 2

Okay I admit it, ClapTrap is one of the more boring side characters in the game, but he’s also super funny. I mean, “I’ll put your corpse in a tea bag,” … it’s just insanity on the first level. You may be irritated by his constant urge to call you a servant and his cowardice, but all that aside, you can’t help but get attached to the Rusty Nuisance.

5) Dr Edward Richtofen – Call of Duty: Zombies

Edouard Richtofen

Those who love the Call of Duty series with zombies are probably familiar with Dr. Richtofen. He is the embodiment of all the stereotypes that we ever had about the German military in the 70s. The doctor is accomplice, crazy and a little deviant (if you know what I mean). He gives off vibes of a “mad Nazi scientist,” and his joy at seeing the decapitated heads and severed limbs make him a hit on the show.

4) HK-47 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

HK-47 puts aside the Star Wars series you’ve never seen before, and it’s a heartbreaking laugh. Originally built as an assassin drone, the primary function of the HK-47 is to be the carrier of death. He’s a psychotic metalhead with an absolute contempt for human life and an undying joy in killing.

3) Ratchet – Ratchet & Clank

The good thing about Ratchet is that his humor is suitable for adults as well as children. He has developed effectively over time and his pompous demeanor from the first game seems to be gone. Although the moron Ratchet is gone, he managed to keep his humor quirky while also portraying a deep storyline for the audience.

2) Captain Qwark – Ratchet & Clank

Captain Qwark is perhaps the dumbest but most hilarious character on the show. Yes, he’s silly, but you just have to love him, with his funny lines and deep musings. He’s supposed to be the “greatest superhero in the galaxy,” but still manages to get himself into trouble as Ratchet ends up saving him.

1) Dr. Eggman – Sonic the Hedgehog

Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik is the main antagonist of Sega’s Sonic series and is described as a round mad scientist who wants to take over the world. However, Sonic and Tails still manage to thwart his plans, making every game a hilarious cesspool of disaster. As soon as the doctor thinks he has achieved his goal, Sonic gleefully sabotages his plans.

In closing

I’m happy to say that there are several funny characters in video games, and dare I say it; it all depends on your humor gauge. Who are the best video game characters of all time? There’s the easy-going humor that Ratchet and Dr. Eggman offer, and then there’s the hardcore R-rated comedy that only adults should engage in. Nonetheless, playing the above games and others are sure to make you laugh.
